Databases
- TOXNET (Toxicology Data Network) (http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/)
- SPECIAL NOTE For ETX 101: Choose to search the HSDB database where you will retrieve the most comprehensive documentation for your compounds, when available. DESCRIPTION: A cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. Includes full-text Toxicological Profiles from ATSDR and the following databases: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System (CCRIS), Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology and Environmental Teratology Information Center (DART/ETIC), GENE-TOX, TOXLINE, Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), International Toxicity Estimates for Risk (ITER), and CHEMIDplus. New databases or services include Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER); Haz-Map, Household Products Database, TOXMAP and Carcinogenic Potency Database.

VPN SPECIAL NOTE For ETX 101: Use the MeSH (pull-down menu when first get into PubMed) to locate Medical Subject Heading for your compound. Then check off the three most appropriate subheadings of "adverse effects", "poisoning" plus "toxicity". If a lot is written on your substance, also check off "Restrict Search to Major Topic headings only" to focus your search to the most relevant articles.
DESCRIPTION: Citations and abstracts for articles published in approximately 8,400 journals in medicine, life sciences, health administration, veterinary medicine, nursing, molecular biology and genetics. PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Full Text Resources
- Toxicological Profiles (ATSDR) (http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/index.asp)
- Author: ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry)
- Scroll down two pages to see Substance Index. Over 309 profiles in final or draft format. "By Congressional mandate, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) produces "toxicological profiles" for hazardous substances found at National Priorities List (NPL) sites. These hazardous substances are ranked based on frequency of occurrence at NPL sites, toxicity, and potential for human exposure. Toxicological profiles are developed from a priority list of 275 substances."
Reference Books
- Merck Index: :an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals (http://uclibs.org/PID/61961)
The Merck Index contains over 11,000 entries (referred to as monographs) mostly for single substances and related compounds (isomers, salts, etc.). Some families of natural products and biological substances are included as well. Data provided include: chemical, generic, and brand names; CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service) registry numbers; physical data and literature references; structures and stereochemistry; toxicity; and information on therapeutic and non-medicinal uses.
The Merck Index Online also includes sections on: organic name reactions, and additional tables. The Merck Index can be searched by structure with installation of a free ChemDraw plug-in available on the structure search page.
