The multi-disciplinary database Academic Search Complete (ASC) provides full-text access to more than 5,500 periodicals, including over 4,600 peer-reviewed journals, and indexing and abstracts for an additional 9,500 journals and 10,000 publications, including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. This scholarly collection offers coverage of information in many areas of academic study including, but not limited to: animal science, anthropology, area studies, astronomy, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, ethnic & multicultural studies, food science & technology, general science, geography, geology, law, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, music, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, psychology, religion & theology, veterinary science, women's studies, zoology and many other fields. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format.

Project Muse provides full text access to over 300 journals in the arts, humanities, social sciences and mathematics, of which about a dozen are philosophy titles. But it also has great potential for crossdisciplinary searching. Its full-text search engine is more detailed than any other index for these journals. Coverage varies by journal.

Sociological Abstracts Database is a primary resource for accessing the latest research sponsored in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Records added after 1974 contain in-depth and nonevaluative abstracts of journal articles.

Evaluate Your Sources

Consider these criteria to assess the credibility of your sources:

Author
Who produced the information? What are the author's qualifications?
Accuracy
Does the source included cited references? Is the information consistent with other sources on the topic?
Objectivity
Is the content presented as fact or speculation? What is the source's purpose?
Timeframe
When was the source written/created? Is the information still relevant?

Definitions

Abstract
A brief summary of the main points in a book, article or other work.
Catalog
A list of records that represent the holdings of a library.
Citation
The information needed to track down a book, article, or other work. For books, this includes the author, title, place and year of publication. For articles, it consists of the author, article title, page numbers, periodical title, volume and date.
Journal
A periodical containing articles on specialized topics, written by researchers or scholars.
Popular Press Article
An article aimed at a general audience, typically written by a journalist or reporter, reviewed by an editor prior to publication, and published in a magazine or newspaper.
Record
The information used to identify and represent books, articles and other material in catalogs and databases.
Scholarly Journal
A publication containing articles that have undergone peer review, a process through which manuscripts submitted to a journal are evaluated for quality by one or more subject experts in addition to the editor before being accepted for publication.
