Changes to the Shields Library Reference Service

Beginning the week of September 19, library student employees will work at the Shields Library Reference Desk in direct assistance to the Reference Librarians. In addition, on weekday afternoons librarians will hold consultation hours at the reference desks on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

The student employees at the first floor reference desk will greet patrons as they enter the library and answer simple directional question. They will be the primary support for the multi-function printing/copying/scanning devices including:

  • How to get a card
  • How to print (black/white and color)
  • How to copy (black/white and color)
  • How to scan
  • Troubleshoot
  • Assist with card problems

The student employees will instruct patrons on how to activate their library cards, activate Kerberos passphrases, instruct patrons on how to set up the VPN, how to access and set up their wireless accounts in the Library, help take students to find books if they are not familiar with LC call numbers and page from lower level if necessary.

The Shields Library first floor reference desk will be staffed as follows:

  • 9:00-10:00am: two student employees
  • 10:00am-5:00pm: one student employee, one librarian
  • 5:00-6:00pm: one librarian

The Humanities/Social Sciences/Government Information Services Consultation Desk on the 2nd floor will be covered by reference librarians Monday - Friday, 1:00-5:00pm.

The Biological/Agricultural Sciences Consultation Desk on the 3rd floor will will be covered by reference librarians, Monday - Friday, 1:00-5:00pm.
