SPARC states "… institutional repositories offer a strategic response to systemic problems in the existing scholarly journal system…, reaping both short-term and ongoing benefits for universities and their faculty and advancing the positive transformation of scholarly communication over the long term.
DARE: Digital Academic Repositories
A joint initiative of Dutch universities to make all of their research results digitally accessible. The KB (National Library of the Netherlands), the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) and the NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) are also cooperating in this unique project.
DSpace: MIT
A joint project of MIT Libraries and the Hewlett-Packard Company, DSpace provides stable long-term storage needed to house the digital products of MIT faculty and researchers.
EPIC: Electronic Publishing Initiative (Columbia University)
EPIC's mission is to create new kinds of scholarly and educational publications through the use of new media technologies in an integrated research and production environment. The site furnishes links to journals, books, working papers and other resources.

TARDIS
A University of Southampton, UK project to investigate strategies to overcome the technical, cultural and academic barriers, which currently restrict the development of institutional e-print archives. The archive will be accessible through the University Library's Web Portal as part of an integrated institutional and multidisciplinary, subject-focused information resource. TARDIS, (Targetting Academic Research for Deposit and Disclosure) is a project funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the Higher Education Funding Councils as part of its DNER Learning and Teaching/Infrastructure Development Programme

It provides online access to several publications and services including publishing tools, access management and conversion of material to digital formats.
