Greening the Library
The General Library recently partnered with campus Facilities Management (with funding from PG&E) on two sustainability projects designed to reduce electrical, chilled water and hot water usage in Shields Library. Because Shields Library has the largest footprint on campus, the potential for savings were significant.
The monitoring based commissioning (MBCx) project included the installation of electric meters and heating and cooling system monitors to enable remote tracking and rapid response to system problems. The MBCx project won the 2008 Best Practice Award for the Energy Efficiency Partnership Program. Building on these successes, Facilities Management moved forward with the installation of occupancy sensors in the book stacks so that they are lighted only when patrons are in the aisles using materials. These projects are part of UCOP’s Policy on Sustainable Practices and are helping UC Davis to manage its energy consumption more efficiently.
In response to the success of the two collaborative sustainability projects, the General Library is pleased to announce that Shields Library has been identified as a candidate for LEED-EB certification Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings).
