- I'm not affiliated with UC Davis, may I use the library?
- Yes, the libraries are open to the public. Material is shelved in
open stacks in public areas.
Library cards are required to take material out of the library.
- How can I get a
Library card and how much does it cost?
- Is there a

- Can I renew my books without coming to the library?
- Yes, non-course reserve material can be renewed in the following ways:
- I know I returned this book, with whom can I speak about the overdue notice I received?
- It depends which library sent you the notice and loaned you the book:

- I requested some material, how can I find out if it is available yet?
- For material owned by the UC Davis Libraries, you may access
your borrowing record. For material not showing on your record or
coming from off campus, contact the Interlibrary Loan Office of the
library where you made the request:

MELVYL
- What happened to MELVYL® passwords?
- CDL/Melvyl Passwords Discontinued:
CDL passwords no longer function after December 31, 2002 when all
CDL-hosted versions of abstracting and indexing databases are retired.
The Proxy Service provides
UC-affiliated users with access to a much more extensive range of licensed
electronic databases and electronic journals.
- How can I learn more about using MELVYL?
- The California Digital Library (CDL)
User's Guide describes available collections and services, including
MELVYL and various databases.

Telnet Version of MELVYL
While online, type "explain [the word, term, database, etc. identifying your
question] e.g. "explain mail," "explain medline,"
"explain commands," etc.

- How do I connect to MELVYL from my home or office?
- You can access MELVYL at www.melvyl.ucop.edu, or telnet to
melvyl.ucop.edu. Information
Technology Express provides instructions for connecting to campus modem pools for
faculty,
staff and
students.
- How do I print, e-mail or download results from MELVYL Web?
- You can print, mail or download all records in a search, a range of
items, or specifically checked items, by clicking the appropriate button.
- Click Print, Mail or Download.
- Follow the onscreen instructions that allow you to select:
- Citation format: short, long, tags, or fields
- Abstract or Text: abstracts are available in some of the article databases,
text is available in MAGS, ABI and COMP only
- Location information and call numbers
- Print:
- Click on the Format for Printing button
- Use the browser's Print function to print.
- Use the browser's Back button to return to your session.
- Retrieve your printout from the Library's IKON printer or your own printer.
Mail:
- Click on the Mail button.
- Enter the destination e-mail address.
- Change the subject lineif necessary.
- Enter an e-mail annotation if you want.
- Click on the Mail Nowbutton.
Download:
- Click on the Download button.
- Your browser will then prompt you to save the file on your computer's disk or diskette.
- Your may also want to change the file name.
- Use the browser's Backbutton to return to your session.
Records will be printed, mailed or downloaded in plain text with buttons,
instructions, graphics and other codes removed.
- How do I e-mail my search results from the telnet version of MELVYL?
- You can mail the results of a search using the MAIL command. Once you
have completed your search, in telnet MELVYL, type:
MAIL [which records][in what format] TO [e-mail address]
Do not type brackets. Fill in the brackets with your specific information.
Example:
MAIL 3-5,20 LONG to youraccount@ucdavis.edu

- Where can I catch the shuttle

- Lost and found items are turned into the Circulation desk. Unclaimed
items are sent to the Campus Police Department.
- Where is Special Collections?
- The Carlson Health Sciences Library Special Collections Room is on
the lower level of the library. Access to the collection is only available
through the Reference/Information Desk.
- Where can I get help using the library?
- Where can I find phone books?
- Phone books for local and neighboring areas are available at the
Carlson Health Sciences Information Desk and at the Blaisdell Medical Library Front
Desk. Telephone directories are
also available on the Web.
- Where can I buy an Ikon card for copying?
- Where can I get a
Departmental copy card for copying?

change to make a photocopy?

- Where can I see what's new from the
libraries?
- Where can I connect my laptop computer to the network?
- Study rooms are now
wired for DHCP internet
access. If you have registered your laptop network card with campus IT,
you may log on with DHCP. Alternatively, you may check out an internet
connection kit from the Reserves desk. Click on the link for more details
about DHCP.
- Where can I see what new journal issues have arrived?
- New journal receipts are displayed weekly in the Carlson Health
Sciences Library Current Periodicals Display and are available for review
on Fridays. New journal receipts are displayed daily in the Blaisdell Medical Library.
- Where can I see what new books have come in?
- New Books are displayed next to the Current Periodicals Display for
about two weeks prior to going to the stacks.
- Where are the video tapes and other audiovisual material?
- The Carlson Health Sciences Library has a small audiovisual
collection and viewing equipment in the Audio Visual Room next to the
Reserve Desk. Several video tape sets, Medical Board reviews, physical
examination and UC Davis Environmental Health & Safety tapes are in Reserves. Holdings are listed in
the MELVYL® Catalog.
- Where is the nearest public phone?
- There is a public pay phone across the courtyard from the entrance of
the Carlson Health Sciences Library and in the nearby dining facility. The
nearest public pay phone to the Blaisdell Medical Library is in the Camellia
Cottage.
- Where is the nearest campus phone?
- Both libraries have a campus phone for onsite phone calls.
- Where can I answer my page?
- Both libraries have a phone for clinicians to answer pages.
- Where is the nearest ATM?
- An ATM is located in the lobby of Tupper Hall, Med Sci 1A to the west
of the Carlson Health Sciences Library. Access is limited to regular
business hours. At the Medical Center, there is an ATM located in the
hospital cafeteria.

- What does Bound vols. at HSL, Current in MED CTR mean?
- It means that the Blaisdell Medical Library has the current unbound
issues of the journal title, but the older bound volumes are at the
Carlson Health Sciences Library. The location of a particular issue is
determined by the binding frequency of that title.
- What does call number mean?
- Call numbers are assigned to library material to map the collection
and keep similar material together. A call number is composed of letters
and numbers. The first line identifies the subject. Subject refinements
and/or author/title filing elements make up the second and perhaps a third
line. The last line reflects the date of publication or the date of the
content.
- Brief list of medical
and veterinary call numbers.
- What does current periodicals mean?
- The term refers to the Carlson Health Sciences Library unbound
journal issues collection on the main level. Once these issues are bound
the are housed downstairs in the stacks. Blaisdell Medical Library unbound
journal issues are shelved with the bound volumes.
- What does current 10 years mean?
- It means that the library does not have volumes of a journal title
older than 10 years.
- What does library use only mean?
- It means that an item may only be used in the library and may not be
checked out, except by library staff-authorized exception.
- What does stacks mean?
- It refers to the area where the majority of the collection is housed.
The Carlson Health Sciences stacks are on the lower level. Other areas
where material is housed may be Reference, Reserves, Current Periodicals,
Special Collections, Audio Visual Room, and Displays.
- What does NRLF mean?
- The Northern Regional Library Facility is a storage facility in
Richmond, CA. It is where the northern UC campus libraries store low use
and older material. Items can be retrieved through Request Book/Journal Services and are
generally available within 2-3 days. Users may use material on site at the
NRLF.
- What does SRLF mean?
- The Southern Regional Library Facility is a storage facility on the
UCLA campus. It is where the southern UC campus libraries store low use
and older material. Items can be retrieved through Request Book/Journal Services and are
generally available within 2-3 days. Users may use material on site at the
SRLF.
