Document Delivery Service
General Information
The Document Delivery Service (DDS) facilitates access to library materials through the transfer of material between campus libraries for the use of UC faculty, staff, and students. DDS is also available to faculty, staff, and graduate students working at sites outside of the Davis/Sacramento area.
This is a fee-based service.
The DDS service is provided to support University-related research and teaching. DDS may not be used to request materials for work for private employers, for personal non-university research, or for recreational reading.
Participating libraries are:
- Carlson Health Sciences Library
- Blaisdell Medical Library
- Peter J. Shields Library
- Physical Sciences & Engineering Library
Registration
UC faculty, staff, and students with valid library cards may register for DDS.
Registration is required to use fee-based DDS services such as obtaining electronic, print or microfiche copies of materials.
Registration is not required for book related services such as checking out books or placing recalls.
Registration is required to use the DDS services. Sign up online.
During registration, choose a home library to process DDS requests and to provide information on the status of those requests. The home library will also be the location where material that cannot be sent through campus mail will be held for pick up.
Submitting Requests
There are two ways to initiate a DDS request:
- Use the REQUEST function in the MELVYL® Catalog or use the UC-eLinks icon from select article databases. Requests submitted will be transmitted directly to the appropriate UC Davis library.
- Use the ILL/DDS web forms
Each journal article or book chapter must be submitted as a separate request.
Requests will usually be processed within one working day of receipt not including delivery time. A large number of requests from an individual may need to be processed over several days.
Every attempt will be made to fill all orders; delivery, however, cannot be guaranteed since occasionally materials are in use or missing. Requesters will be notified of delays.
Requesters must comply with current United States copyright law.
Material Delivery
Book loans must be picked up at the Circulation Desk.
Normal delivery for articles is by posting an electronic copy to a library server. When the time is made available, the requester will be sent an email with instructions for accessing the electronic copy. The electronic copy will be made available for 30 days or 6 downloads.
Photocopies and fiche copies may be delivered by campus mail, FAX or be held for pick-up at the Circulation Desk. For FAX delivery, FAX machines must be able to receive 24 hours every day.
Requests exceeding thirty (30) pages will be supplied as photocopies.
