Database [Producer] Best Methods for Importing Citations into EndNote
Agricola [SilverPlatter]

The filter that came with your EndNote program will no longer work with Agricola (SP)'s Direct Export. Open the Filters folder of your EndNote program, delete the Agricola (SP) filter by dragging it to the trash, and download this filter by right-clicking it and choosing Save Target As... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link As ... (in Netscape or Mozilla): http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/dept/instruc/research/endnote/files/cab-abstracts.enf

  1. Mark desired records. Click on the floppy disk icon on the right.
  2. Go to Save These Fields:, click on the pulldown menu and select Complete Record.
  3. Under Save or Export These Records:, make sure the citations you selected are included for export. You can also select All Records or specify a range of citations.
  4. At the top of the screen, select Save to disk. Do not select Export to Procite, EndNote or Reference Manager!
  5. Open the EndNote library you want to put citations into. Go to File and choose Import. To the right of the box marked Import Data File: click Choose File ... Under Import Option: click on the pulldown menu and select Other Filters ... Click the Find button and select Ovid. Choose CAB Abstracts and click OK.
America: History and Life [ABC-CLIO]

A new filter was created 2/03, available by right clicking on: ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/pc/filters/ABC-CLIO.enf, choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Netscape or Mozilla), and saving to the Filters folder of your EndNote program. See Using Connection Files and Filters in EndNote for further instructions.

  1. Select desired records from results list.
  2. Click on Export button.
  3. Select radio button for Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager.
  4. Click on Save button.
  5. Follow automatic prompts to transfer record(s) to EndNote library.
Anthropology Plus [via OCLC/FirstSearch]
  1. Do your search in the database. You can either click the leftside boxes of citations you want to download into Endnote or you can click the Mark All box at the bottom of the window, which selects all citations in the window.
  2. When done, click Export.
  3. Make sure that the citations you selected are selected for export; you can either export the last ten citations or all marked citations.
  4. Make sure the button marked Export to: EndNote is selected.
  5. EndNote will open, asking you to select the library you want to put the citations into. Navigate on your hard drive to where it is and click Open.
  6. The Choose an Import Filter window will open. Click the Find by button to the right and go to OCLC. Select the ArticleFirst (OCLC) filter. Click Choose.
Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) [CSA]

Filter, if not installed in your Filters folder, is available at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/pc/filters/ASFA_(CSA).enf; right-click on this link and choose Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Netscape or Mozilla). Save in the Filters folder of your EndNote program.   1. In the database: Select references.

Business Source Premier (EBSCO)
  1. Select items.
  2. Click Export button.
  3. Select Radio button Direct Eport to EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager.
  4. Follow automatic prompts to transfer records.

Due to the way EBSCO presents data in Business Source Premier, dates may not display in your EndNote library as you might want them to. Dates (e.g. June 15, 2006) are presented numerically; 2006 appears in the Year field as expected, but June 15 appears in the Date field as 06 15. If you want the month to display as a word, you must go through downloaded search results and correct the Date field manually. You can also do a find-and-replace (Control+R) to save yourself time.

CAB Abstracts [SilverPlatter]

Do not use the Direct Export feature; it will lose valuable data for any format other than journal articles. Instead, select the floppy disc iron to the right and choose Save to Disk. Save your search results somewhere on your hard drive. Then open the Endnote library you want to save your search results to and go to File —> Import. Select the file you have just downloaded somewhere on your drive. Then click the Find button and select SilverPlatter and scroll to CAB and select it. Click OK.

Conference Papers Index [CSA]

  6. If using Netscape or Mozilla, a dialog box will open, and you will be asked to Open using ovdfile. Click OK. If using IE, this step is skipped.
  7. EndNote will open and ask you to select the library into which you want to import the citations. Select the library and click Open.

When searching away from your EndNote library, use the Compendex_(OVID) filter, available at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/pc/filters/Ei_Compendex_(OVID).enf, if not already loaded in your Filters folder. Download this file by right-clicking on the link, choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... Expanded Academic ASAP [Thomson/Gale]

Download filter http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/dept/instruc/research/endnote/files/expanded-academic.enf by right-clicking it and choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Netscape, Mozilla or Firefox). Then drag the filter to the Filters folder of your EndNote program.

Citations from Expanded Academic can be emailed only, not downloaded.

  1. After you have done your search, check boxes of citations you want to put in your EndNote library; remember that checking Mark All at the upper left of the window will mark only the citations in the present screen, and a maximum of fifty citations may be checked per search.
  2. Once you have finished marking citations, click on Marked Items at the top center. Then choose E-mail.
  3. In the next window, under E-mail Format, click the radio buttons for Plain Text and Citation. Under Bibliographic Citation Format, click the radio button that says Plain Text with Bibliographic Tags (Z39.80).
  4. Once you have received your email and saved your message, open EndNote, go to File, then Import, then Choose File ... and go to where on your hard drive you saved your email result.
  5. Click on Filter Options, choose Other Filters ... and scroll through the list of filters to Expanded Academic. Select it, and click on Import.
Fish and Fisheries Worldwide [NISC]
  1. Check boxes of citations you wish to download in an EndNote library you have created.
  2. Under Select Display Format at the top of the page, choose Marked Full Records.
  3. Click Export.
  4. In the next window, click EndNote.
  5. EndNote will open, asking you to choose the library you want to download citations into. Navigate on your hard drive to where you have saved your library. Citations will be downloaded.
Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA) [SilverPlatter]

Harvest: UC Davis Library Catalog [University of California, Davis]

If you want call numbers to download into your EndNote library with citations, first download this current Harvest filter by right-clicking the link and choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Netscape, Mozilla or Firefox): http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/dept/instruc/research/endnote/files/harvest-ucdavis.enf and then dragging it to the Filters folder of your EndNote program. Make sure you delete any U_of_California-Davis.enf or harvest-ucdavis.enf that is already there. After doing that, go to Harvest UC Davis Catalog under Research Tools.

  1. DIRECT DOWNLOAD OF HARVEST RECORDS INTO ENDNOTE DOES NOT WORK WITH INTERNET EXPLORER. YOU MUST USE A NETSCAPE SUITE WEB BROWSER (I.E. FIREFOX, MOZILLA OR SEAMONKEY).
  2. Do your search in Harvest; either select individual citations for download by checking the boxes to the left or select Select All above Title.
  3. Once you have selected desired citations, click Add to My E-Shelf.
  4. Click My E-Shelf on the upper right of the window.
  5. Click Select All above Title.
  6. Click Save/Mail.
  7. In the next window, under Records:, click the All (BASKET) radio button.
  8. Under Record format, go to Select Predefined Format: and click on the pulldown menu, selecting EndNote/RIS Tagged Output Format.
  9. Under Encoding:, click the radio button ISO 8859-1.
  10. Scroll down and click Go.
  11. Another window will open, asking you with the radio button Open it with: to select a program to open the file. Click Choose ... and navigate on your hard drive to the EndNote.exe program and select it by clicking Open and then OK. On most PCs the path is: C:\Program Files\EndNote X\EndNote.exe.
  12. EndNote will open, asking you to select which library you want citations downloaded into. Select your library and click OK.
  13. If you want UCD call numbers in your citations, bear in mind that call numbers will download into the Notes field, not the Call Number field. You must cut and paste call numbers into that field.
INSPEC [Ovid]

When searching from the computer which contains your EndNote library, use the Direct Export feature.

  1. Mark desired citations.
  2. Click on Results Manager link.
  3. In Citations box, choose selected citations.
  4. In Citation Format box, choose Direct Export.
  5. Click on Save button.

JSTOR
  1. Below the citation you want to transfer, click on the link Export this Citation. Unfortunately, there is no way to export more than one citation at a time.
  2. On the window that comes up, among the export options, click on the link for EndNote.
  3. Follow the prompts to select your EndNote library and transfer the record.
Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts [CSA]

Filter: http://www.lib.ucdavis.edu/dept/instruc/research/endnote/files/llba-csa.enf

The filter that came with EndNote XI is defective and will import all search results as books. Delete the LLBA filter from the Filters folder of your EndNote program and substitute this edited filter by right clicking it, choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Firefox or SeaMonkey), and saving to the Filters folder of your EndNote program.

  1. In the database: Select references. You can download all citations if you wish, but the limit in this database is 500.
  2. Click on Print/Save/Email Records button.
  3. Choose appropriate File format (PC) and click on Save.
  4. Open EndNote; choose File and Import.
  5. In the window that opens, under Import File Name select the file you just downloaded. Under Import Options: choose Other Filters ... and scroll to LLBA (CSA). Click Import.

Due to irregularities in the way data is presented, you may still find information not landing in the proper fields, so review of downloads is recommended.

MELVYL (University of California)

Filter available at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/pc/filters/U_of_California.enf.

The UC contract with Ovid for MLA Bibliography ends June 30, 2005. After that date, use MLA Bibliography [CSA]

MLA (Modern Language Association) Bibliography [CSA]

The filter that came with EndNote XI is faulty; it will import book chapters and journal articles improperly. Delete the MLA (CSA) filter from the Filters folder of your EndNote program and substitute this one by right-clicking the link and choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link As ... (in Firefox or SeaMonkey).

  1. Select citations in MLA for download. You may import entire search results up to a limit of 500.
  2. Click Save/Print/Email.
  3. Set File Format to PC and click Save.
  4. In Internet Explorer: a window will open entitled File Download

    1. Click Save. Save your search result; this is usually saved to the Desktop.
    2. Open EndNote, go to the File menu and choose Import.
    3. In the window that opens, click Choose File ... and go to where you have saved your search result.
    4. Under Import Option, click the pulldown menu and choose Other Filters ...
    5. In the window that opens, click Find by and select CSA.
    6. Scroll to MLA (CSA) and click Import.

    In Firefox or SeaMonkey, a window will open.

    1. Click the radio button marked Open With ...
    2. Click on the pulldown menu, select Other ... and navigate on your hard drive to where Endnote resides. Click OK.
    3. EndNote will open; find the library you want to download the citations into. Doubleclick it.
    4. Another window will open, asking you to select the proper filter.
    5. Click Find by and select CSA.
    6. Scroll to MLA (CSA) and click Choose.
National Technical Information Service (NTIS) [CSA]

  10. Click Import.

  1. When searching from the computer which contains your EndNote library, use the Export feature.
  2. Mark desired citations.
  3. Click on Export button.
  4. In Export section, choose Marked records.
  5. In Export to section, choose EndNote.
  6. Click on Export button.
  7. EndNote will open and with a window to choose the Library into which you want to import the citations. Select appropriate Library, and click on Open.
  8. Wilson Full-Text Education

There is no filter for the Wilson Full-Text Education database. Download the filter here by right-clicking this link and choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link As ... (in Firefox or SeaMonkey) and saving to the Filters folder of your EndNote program.

  1. Do your search in Internet Explorer or Firefox/Seamonkey. Either click individual citations to save or go directly to Exporting/Citing.
  2. Go to Export to RefWorks, EndNote software and click on the plus sign and click on the Marked Set if you have clicked individual citations or click on the radio button for a range of citations of up to 100 at a time.
  3. Then click the radio button for The EndNote Filter under Download Record(s) info.
    • Internet Explorer:
      Click Export. (Make sure IE is not set up to block popups.) Right-click on the button that says here. Choose Save Target As ... and save somewhere on your hard drive, preferably your desktop.
    • Firefox/SeaMonkey:
      Click Export. A window will open, where by clicking the radio button under Open it with: you can navigate on your hard drive to where you have EndNote. Click OK.
  4. Open EndNote.
  5. Go to File —> Import.
  6. Under Import Data File, find your downloaded file and select it.
  7. Under Import Option:, scroll to Wilson Education and select it.
  8. Click Import.
Zoological Record [CSA]

The filter that came with EndNote XI is defective and will not import anything other than journal articles (i.e. no books or book chapter citations will be imported). Delete the Zoological Record Plus (CSA) filter from the Filters folder of your EndNote program and substitute this edited filter by right clicking it, choosing Save Target As ... (in Internet Explorer) or Save Link Target As ... (in Firefox or SeaMonkey), and saving to the Filters folder of your EndNote program.

  1. In the database: Select references. You can download all citations if you wish, but the limit in this database is 500.
  2. Click on Print/Save/Email Records button.
  3. Choose appropriate File format (PC) and click on Save.
  4. Open EndNote; choose File and Import.
  5. In the window that opens, under Import File Name select the file you just downloaded. Under Import Options: choose Other Filters ... and scroll to Zoological Record Plus (CSA). Click Import.
