Best Methods for Saving and Importing Citations into EndNote |

Agricola [SilverPlatter]
|
The filter that came with your EndNote program will no longer work with
Agricola (SP)'s Direct Export. Open the Filters folder of your EndNote program,
delete the Agricola (SP) filter by dragging it to the trash, and download this
filter by Control-clicking it and choosing Save Target As...
(in Internet Explorer), Save Link As ... (in Netscape or Mozilla)
or Download Linked File (in Safari):

- Mark desired records. Click on the floppy disk icon on
the right.
- Go to Save These Fields:, click on the pulldown
menu and select Complete Record.
- Under Save or Export These Records:, make sure the
citations you selected are included for export. You can also select
All Records or specify a range of citations.
- At the top of the screen, select Save to disk. Do not
select Export to Procite, EndNote or Reference Manager.
- Open the EndNote library you want to put citations into. Go to
File and choose Import. To the right
of the box marked Import Data File: click Choose
File ... Under Import Option: click on the
pulldown menu and select Other Filters ... Click the
Find button and select Ovid. Choose
CAB Abstracts and click OK

Agriculture & Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts [CSA]

Open EndNote and go to Edit → Import Filters.
Click on the Find button and select Cambridge
Scientific Abstracts. Scroll down to Oceanic Abstracts and
select Edit. Go to File and choose Save
As. Name the new filter Agr&EnvBiotechAb or
something like that. In the Category box put Cambridge
Scientific Abstracts. Save the filter in the Filters folder
of your EndNote program.
In the database, click citations you wish to download into an EndNote
library you have created. When ready, click on Save/Print/Email
Records. Under Show click on the pulldown
menu and choose Full record.Click on Save.
Open EndNote and go to the library where you want to save your citations.
Go to File → Import. Click on Choose
File and go to where on your hard drive you downloaded citations.
Under Import Option click on the pulldown menu and
choose Other Filters. Click on Find,
choosing Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, and scroll
to Agr&EnvBiotechAb (or whatever you have named
the filter). Click on Import. |

- In the database: Tag desired references.
- Click on Tagged Results button to view just the

- Click submit, and then from the browser file menu,
select Save As, to save as a text file.

Do your search in the database. You can either click the leftside boxes
of citations you want to download into Endnote or you can click the
Mark All box at the bottom of the window, which selects
all citations in the window.

When done, click Export.

Make sure that the citations you selected are selected for export; you can
either export the last ten citations or all marked citations.

Make sure the button marked Export to: EndNote is selected.

EndNote will open, asking you to select the library you want to put the
citations into. Navigate on your hard drive to where it is and click
Open.

The Choose an Import Filter window will open. Click the
Find by button to the right and go to OCLC. Select the
ArticleFirst (OCLC) filter. Click Choose.

- Mark desired citations.

- Choose Marked records from this search option.
- Choose EndNote option.

- EndNote program will open and ask you to choose which Library
to import the citations.
- Then you will be asked which filter to use. Select ArticleFirst
(OCLC).
When searching away from your EndNote library, you must save records
to a file and use a filter which, if not installed in your Filters
folder, you can download onto your desktop by Control+clicking it and choosing Download Link to Disk (in Internet Explorer), Save Link Target As (in Firefox, Netscape or Mozilla) or Download Linked File (in Safari),

- In the database: Mark desired citations.

When searching from the computer which contains your EndNote library,
use the Export to Reference Software feature.
- In the database: Mark desired citations.
- Click on Submit Marks button.
- Click on Marked List button to view only marked
items.
- Check off additional information you would like included with
the basic citation. Do not select cited references
as this will cause a very large, long download that will results
in the reference lists from your marked articles to be loaded
into the notes field.
- Click Export to Reference Software button.
- A dialog box will open asking you if you want to open
the file using ciwfile. Click on OK.
- EndNote will open, and allow you to select the library to which
you wish to import the citations.
When searching away from your EndNote library, save text file and
use the ISI Web of Science filter available at the following URL: ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/mac/filters/Web_of_Science_(ISI).hqx if
not already loaded in your Filters folder. Download this file onto
your desktop by Control+clicking it and choosing Download Link to Disk (in Internet Explorer), Save Link Target As (in Firefox, Netscape or Mozilla) or Download Linked File (in Safari), then save to the
Filters folder of your EndNote program:
- In the database: Mark desired citations.
- Click on Submit Marks button.

BIOSIS Previews [ISI] |
Select Biosis [ISI] from Electronic Databases by clicking B or typing Biosis
in the Keywords box. Note: This will work in Internet Explorer, Netscape,
Mozilla or Firefox; it will not work in Safari.
- Select General Search.
- Do your search by topic or author.
- Once search results have appeared, click the boxes of citations you want to
download into an EndNote library you have created. You may also go to the right
column and select All records on this page (unless you have
changed your display to show 25 or 50 records per page, this is 10 record); you
may also click the radio button saying Records __ to __ and
type a range of citations. Then click on Submit Marks.
- Go to the top of the window and click on Marked List.
- Under Step 1. Select the fields to include in the output,
select fields you want downloaded. Remember to click Abstracts
if you want abstracts in your EndNote library citations.
- In Step 2. Select an option click on Export to
Reference Software.
- In Internet Explorer EndNote will open, asking you to open the library
you want citations to download into; in Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox a window
will open; click on the radio button that says Open it with
and navigate on your hard drive to where you have EndNote and select it. The file
should be called EndNote.app (in OS 10.4) or simply
EndNote (in earlier OSs). EndNote will open, asking you to open
the library you citations to download into.

- Do your search in the database, being sure to apply any limits you may want (e.g. whether peer-reviewed, a range of publication dates, whether to limit to one periodical title, publication types). When your search result appears, click the boxes that say Add of citations you want to download into an EndNote library you have created. You may click Add 1-10 (if there are that many citations in your search result), but bear in mind that you are limited to a total download of fifty items.
- Click on the icon that says Folder has items toward the top right of the screen.
- Click on Save to Disk.
- Click on the blue tab Bibliographic Manager in the next window.
- Click on the radio button that says Citations in a format that can be uploaded to bibliographic management software.
- Click Save.
- In the next window, go to File and choose Save As.
- Click the Format: pulldown menu and select Plain Text.
- Open EndNote to the library you want to download citations into. Go to File and choose Import.
- In the next window, navigate on your hard drive to where you have saved your search result and select it. Click on the pulldown menu that reads Import Options:, select Other Filters ... and scroll to Refman RIS.enf
- Click OK.
Due to the way EBSCO presents data in Business Source Premier, dates may not display in your EndNote library as you might want them to. Dates (e.g. June 15, 2006) are presented numerically; 2006 appears in the Year field as expected, but June 15 appears in the Date field as 06 15. If you want the month to display as a word, you must go through downloaded search results and correct the Date field manually.

CAB Abstracts [SilverPlatter] |
Do not use the Direct Export feature; it will lose valuable data
for any format other than journal articles. Instead, select the
floppy disc iron to the right and choose Save to Disk.
Save your search results somewhere on your hard drive. Then open
the Endnote library you want to save your search results to and
go to File —> Import. Select the file
you have just downloaded somewhere on your drive. Then click the
Find button and select SilverPlatter and scroll
to CAB and select it. Click OK.

MIME Type-Application/x-bibliographic; File
Type- Click Browse and navigate on
your hard drive to where EndNote is located. Click on Open. Under Handling click
on pulldown menu and choose View With Application. Click
on OK. Click on OK in the
next window. If using Netscape or Mozilla, choose Edit>Preferences and
select Navigator/Applications. Click New and
enter: Description-Ovid Direct Export; MIME

- EndNote will open and ask you to select the library into which
you want to import the citations. Select the library and click Open.
When searching away from your EndNote library, use the Compendex_(OVID)
filter, available at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/mac/filters/Ei_Compendex_(Ovid).hqx if
not already loaded in your Filters folder. Download this file onto

After you have done your search, check boxes of citations you want to put
in your EndNote library; remember that checking Mark All
at the upper left of the window will mark only the citations in the present
screen, and a maximum of fifty citations may be checked per search. Once you
have finished marking citations, click on Marked Items at
the top center. Then choose E-mail. In the next window, under
E-mail Format, click the radio buttons for Plain Text
and Citation. Under Bibliographic Citation Format,
click the radio button that says Plain Text with Bibliographic Tags
(Z39.80). Once you have received your email and saved your message,
open EndNote, go to File, then Import, then
Choose File ... and go to where on your hard drive you saved
your email result. Click on Filter Options, choose Other
Filters ... and scroll through the list of filters to Expanded
Academic. Select it, and click on Import.

- The Direct Export feature in Fish and Fisheries Worldwide does
not work with Macs. You must use a filter. Download this

Do your search in Harvest; either select individual citatations
for download by checking the boxes to the left or select
Select All above Title.

Once you have selected desired citations, click Add to
My E-Shelf.

Click My E-Shelf on the upper right of the window.

Click Select All above Title.

Click Save/Mail.

In the next window, under Records:, click the
All (BASKET) radio button.

Under Record format, go to Select Predefined
Format: and click on the pulldown menu, selecting
EndNote/RIS Tagged Output Format.

Under Encoding:, click the radio button
ISO 8859-1.

Scroll down and click Go.

The Downloads window will open, showing progress
of the download. Your search results will be saved wherever you
have configured Safari to put downloads. If you are unsure of
where that is, check under Preferences, then
Save Downloaded Files to.

Open EndNote, open the library you want your Harvest citations to
go into, go to File and then Import.

In the new window that opens, under Import File Name
choose the file you just downloaded.

Under Import Options: click on the pulldown menu
and scroll to RefMan RIS.enf.

Under Text Translation: choose Unicode
(UTF-8).
-
Click Import.
-
If you want UCD call numbers in your citations, bear in mind that
call numbers will download into the Notes field, not the Call Number
field. You must cut and paste call numbers into that field.

When searching from the computer which contains your EndNote library,
use the Direct Export feature.
- Configure your web browser. If using Internet Explorer, choose Edit>Preferences. Select File
Helpers from the left column. On the right column,
search for EndNote. If you find it, click on Change.
If you don't, click on Add: EndNote Direct Export Ovid; Extension-.cgi;

Type- Click Browse and navigate on
your hard drive to where EndNote is located. Click on Open. Under Handling click
on pulldown menu and choose View With Application. Click
on OK. Click on OK in the
next window. If using Netscape or Mozilla, choose Edit>Preferences and
select Navigator/Applications. Click New and
enter: Description-Ovid Direct Export; MIME
Type-Application/x-bibliographic; Suffixes-.cgi;
Handled by-Application (Click Choose and
select EndNote); File Type-Text.
- Mark desired citations.
- Click on Results Manager link.
- In Citations box, choose selected
citations.
- In Citation Format box, choose Direct
Export.
- Click on Save button.
- If using Netscape, a dialogue box will open, and you will be
asked to Open using ovdfile. Click OK. If
using IE, this step is skipped.
- EndNote will open and ask you to select the library into which
you want to import the citations. Select the library and click Open.
When searching away from your EndNote library, use the INSPEC_(OVID)
filter, available at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/mac/filters/INSPEC_(OVID).hqx if
not already loaded in your Filters folder. Download this file onto
your desktop by Control+clicking it and choosing Download Link to Disk (in Internet Explorer), Save Link Target As (in Firefox, Netscape or Mozilla) or Download Linked File (in Safari); drag filter to the
Filters folder of your EndNote program. See Using

- In the database: Mark desired citations.
- Click on Results Manager link
- In Citations box, choose selected
