Gateway Sites

Julian Dierkes' Sociolog.
A Sociological Tour Through Cyberspace
Sociosite: Going Dutch in Sociology
An excellent English-language project based at the University of Amsterdam (a Dutch version is under construction). "The intention is to provide a comprehensive listing of all sociology resources on the Internet."This admittedly ambitious goal means that this site will "always be 'under construction.'" (See "About Us" for further programmatic statements.)A number of standard categories ["Subject Areas," "Sociologists (over eighty links here alone)]," "Journals," "Libraries," "Data Archives," "Research Centers," etc) provide links to hundreds of destinations. The worldwide directory ("Who's Where") would be more useful if the addresses were updated more frequently, but that may be impossible, given the scope of the project.
WWW Virtual Library: Sociology.
One of the earliest and largest gateways in the field (established on January 15, 1995). The search engine can be set for this site only or can range over the entire WWW Virtual Library domain. Sections for departments, associations and organizations, research centers, databases and archives (twenty nine links here alone), courses and curricular resources, journals, theories, and software resources.

Electronic Journals

Although there is still no single way to easily locate and identify a subject population of electronic journals, the library's Harvest catalog goes some distance in fulfilling this need. Searches by keyword or subject keyword (e.g "sociology-periodicals"), along with a limit to electronic format, can help isolate titles held at UC Davis.

Only a few anecdotal illustrations are provided here. The first are examples of individual journal titles; the last two in this group appear in electronic format only, while the first appears in both electronic and paper formats. The last entry in the list is a service providing access to several dozen leading periodicals in the humanities and social sciences.
