How Are Library Resources Organized?

The Library of Congress Classification System - Subject Outline

The materials (books, journals, magazines, serials, newspapers, etc.) in this library are organized on the shelves according to the Library of Congress Classification system, which separates all knowledge into 21 classes (as outline below.) A letter of the alphabet identifies each class, subclasses by combinations of letter, then subtopics within classes and subclasses by a numerical notation.

Biography: Lives of individuals, illustrative of any subject, are normally classifed with that subject, e.g. Albert Einstein is classified in QC16.E5. Otherwise they are classifed with general biography in CT.

Common Subject Headings Related to the East Asian Studies

(Humanities and Social Sciences Only)

The libraries in the United States use system of "Library of Congress Subject Headings" (LCSH) to describe the subject of each item. The subject headings, either a single word or a phrase, are controlled vocabulary. You need to use LCSH if you choose to search the library catalogs by subject. Therefore, familiarizing the subject headings is very helpful. The following are some common subject headings that are related to the East Asian Studies for your reference. Please also consult the newer edition of LCSH in the library for new subject headings or revised headings.
