Circulation Policies

Borrowing Reserves Materials

A valid library card is required to check out Reserves material.

Reserves material check out is for limited loan periods, to ensure the greatest access.

Hourly Loans:
Item is due 1, 2 or 4 hours from the time checked out. These materials may be checked out overnight if the normal time due falls after the library is closed. Study rooms keys are due before closing that same day.
Daily Loans:
Item is due 1, 3 or 7 days following check out. The Blaisdell Medical Library (BML) has a limited number of items restricted to School of Medicine students with a 28-day loan period.

Renewing Reserves Materials

Online renewals are not available for Reserves materials.

Carlson Health Sciences Library (CHSL) Reserves material:
Hourly Loans may be renewed in-person at the Public Services Desk. Daily Loans may be renewed in-person or by telephone (530) 752‑8041.
Blaisdell Medical Library Reserve (BML) material:
Material with a 28-day loan period may be renewed in-person or by telephone (916) 734‑3529. Other Reserve materials may not be renewed.

Items with holds on them may not be renewed.

Returning a Reserves Item

Reserves material must be returned directly to the Public Service Desk from which it was borrowed. Reserves items are considered still outstanding and will accrue overdue fines until checked-in at the appropriate Public Service Desk. Reserves material should never be returned to any on-campus book drop or to a branch other than that from which it was borrowed.

Holds

A hold may be placed on an item only if it is checked out to another borrower. Holds are not accepted over the telephone.

Hourly Loans:
Held for one-half hour after returned (CHSL only)
Daily Loans:
1, 3 or 7 day loans held last hour before closing on the day the item is due and the first hour after opening on the following day (CHSL only). 28-day loans held for one week following return of the item (BML ony).

Fine Rates and Replacement Billing

Reserves materials accrue overdue fines if not returned on time. Replacement billing of these items is also accelerated and is in addition to any overdue fines that may be assessed.

Hourly Loans:
$2.00 for each hour or portion thereof overdue for the hours that Reserves is open, with a maximum fine of $50.00 per item. These items are heavily used and must be returned promptly to allow other students to check them out.
Daily Loans:
$6.00 for the first day. After that, fines accrue at $4.00 per day, with a maximum fine of $50.00 per item.
