EndNote v. 5 Step by Step Guided Tour

Introduction to an EndNote Library

  1. Open an Existing Reference Library
    1. File -> Open -> Open Library
    2. Open Examples
    3. Open Paleo.enl
  2. Customize the Library Window
    1. Edit -> Preferences
    2. Click Display Fields
    3. Click Reference Type
    4. Click OK
    5. Scroll to right
  3. Click Sort
    1. Click Year Column Heading -> Ascending
    2. Click Year Column Heading -> Descending
    3. Click Author Column Heading -> Ascending
    4. Click Author Column Heading -> Descending
  4. Setting a Default Library
    1. Click Edit -> Preferences
    2. Click Libraries
    3. Click Add Open Libraries
    4. Click OK

Searching Remote Databases from EndNote

  1. Open a New Database
    1. File -> New
    2. File Name -> Test.enl
    3. Click Save
  2. Search and Import PubMed references from EndNote
    1. File -> Connect -> Connect -> PubMed (NLM)
    2. Type -> Radial Keratotomy
    3. Field -> Any Field
    4. Connector -> AND
    5. Type -> Follow-Up Studies
    6. Field -> Keywords (MESH)
    7. Click Perform Search
    8. Retrieve References From: 1 through 10
    9. Click OK
    10. Click Copy All References To -> Test.enl

Importing References Downloaded from Online Databases

Switch to PubMed (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?tool=cdl&holding=ucdlib)

  1. Search & Import References from PubMed
    1. Search PubMed
      1. Search PubMed for -> Sushi
      2. Click Go
      3. Check boxes to select records
      4. Click Clip Add
      5. Click Clipboard
      6. Change Summary to Medline Display
      7. Click Display
      8. Click Text
      9. File -> Save As -> Sushi.txt
      10. Click Save
    2. Switch to EndNote
    3. Import PubMed references
      1. File -> Import
      2. Import Data File -> Sushi.txt
      3. Click Open
      4. Import Option -> PubMed (NLM)
      5. Duplicates -> Discard Duplicates
      6. Click Import
    4. Switch to CAB Abstracts (see /ul/research/databases/?list=med)
  2. Search & Import References from CAB Abstracts
    1. Search CAB Abstracts
      1. Find -> Bovine and Brucellosis
      2. Field -> Title
      3. Languages -> English
      4. Click Start Search
      5. Click Save
      6. Which Records do you want to save? Record Number 1 to 10 of current search
      7. Which fields? All Fields
      8. Include -> Record number and database name AND Field Labels -> Short Labels
      9. Click Save Records
      10. File Name -> BovineBrucellosis.txt
      11. Click Save
    2. Switch to EndNote
    3. Import CAB Abstracts References
      1. File -> Import
      2. Import Data File -> BovineBrucellosis.txt
      3. Click Open
      4. Import Option -> CAB Abstracts (SP)
      5. Duplicates -> Discard Duplicates
      6. Click Import
    4. Switch to Web of Science (www.webofscience.com/)
  3. Search & Export References from Web of Science
    1. Search  Web of Science
      1. Click Easy Search
      2. Check Science Citation Index Expanded
      3. Click Topic
      4. Search Terms -> Sushi AND Parasites
      5. Click Relevance
      6. Click Search
      7. Click Mark All
      8. Click Marked List
      9. Fields to include in addition to author, title & source -> Keywords, Abstract
    2. Export References
      1. Click Export to Reference Software
      2. Export to: EndNote
      3. Click OK
      4. File name -> Test.enl

Switch to EndNote

    1. References -> New
    2. Reference Type -> Journal Article
    3. Author -> Shell, E.D.
    4. Year -> 1998

    7. Volume -> 3
    8. Issue -> 2

    9. Perform Search

Building Bibliographies in Your Word Processor

Switch to WORD

  1. Open a WORD Document
    1. File -> Open a New Document
  2. Identify References to Cite (3 Methods)
    1. Method A
      1. Type -> It's easy to format a bibliography
      2. Tools -> Go to EndNote
      3. Ctrl-Click to select 3 random references to cite
      4. Add-in -> Insert Citation(s)
    2. Method B
      1. Type -> Search and mark references
      2. Tools -> Go to EndNote
      3. References -> Search
      4. Type -> Triceratops
      5. Field -> Any Field
      6. Click Perform Search
      7. Click Whitney reference
      8. Add-in -> Insert Citation(s)
    3. Method C
      1. Type -> Identify text in your manuscript [allen, 1988]
      2. File -> Save As
  3. Select Favorite Output Styles

    Switch to EndNote

    1. File -> Output Styles -> Open Style Manager
    2. Click  Find
    3. Click  Medicine
    4. Click Mark All
  4. Switch to WORD document

    Create Final Manuscript and Bibliography
    1. Tools -> Format Bibliography
    2. With Style -> Nature Medicine
    3. Click Format
    4. Tools -> Format Bibliography
    5. With Style -> New England Journal of Medicine
    6. Click Format
