EndNote v. 6 - Step by Step Guided Tour

Part 1: Introduction to an EndNote Library

  1. Open a new library
    1. From the File menu, click New
    2. New Reference Library File Name: Tutorial.enl
    3. Click Save

Part 2: Changing EndNote Preferences

  1. Set a default library
    1. Open the Tutorial library
    2. From the Edit menu, click Preferences
    3. Highlight Libraries
    4. Click Add Open Libraries
    5. Click Apply
    6. Click OK

Part 3: Searching PubMed from within EndNote

  1. Connect to PubMed from within EndNote
    1. Open the Tutorial Library
    2. From the Tools menu, click the Connect submenu, then Connect
    3. Highlight PubMed (NLM)
    4. Click Connect
  2. Search PubMed, then Copy to EndNote Library
    1. Enter Living Donors as the first search term
    2. Click AND
    3. Enter Kidney Transplantation as the second search term
    4. Click Add Field
    5. Enter Altruism as the third search term
    6. Click Search
    7. Click OK
    8. Click Copy All References to: Tutorial.enl

Part 4: Importing References into EndNote

  1. Search PubMed, Save text file, then Import to EndNote
    1. Search PubMed
      1. Enter Kidney Transplantation/ethics in the Search box
      2. Click Go
      3. Change Display from Summary to MEDLINE
      4. Click Display
      5. Click Send To Text
      6. From the File menu, Save As ethics.txt
      7. Click Save
    2. Switch to EndNote
    3. Import PubMed records
      1. From the File menu, click Import
      2. Import Data File: ethics.txt
      3. Import Option: Other Filters, then PubMed (NLM)
      4. Discard Duplicates
      5. No Translation
      6. Click Import
  2. Search CAB Abstracts, Save text file, then Import to EndNote
    1. Search CAB Abstracts
      1. Enter euthanasia and ethics in the Search box
      2. Click Start Search
      3. Click Save
      4. Which records do you want to save? All records in the current search
      5. Which fields? All fields
      6. Include: Record number and database name
      7. Include: Field labels: Short labels
      8. Click Save Records
      9. Save file as euthanasia.txt
      10. Click Close
    2. Switch to EndNote
    3. Import CAB Abstracts records
      1. From the File menu, Click Import
      2. Import Data File: euthanasia.txt
      3. Import Option: CAB Abstracts (SP)
      4. Discard Duplicates
      5. No Translation
      6. Click Import
  3. Search Web of Science, then Import Directly
    1. Search Web of Science
    2. Click Easy Search
    3. Check Science Citation Index Expanded
    4. Click Topic
    5. Enter animal AND emotions in the Search box
    6. Click Search
    7. Click Mark All
    8. Click Marked List
    9. Fields to include: Author, Title, Source, Keywords, Abstract
    10. Click on Export to Reference Software
    11. Export to: EndNote
    12. File name: Tutorial.enl
  4. Search Biosis, then Import Directly
    1. Search Biosis
    2. Enter multiple sclerosis and botulinum toxin in the Search Box
    3. Click Perform Search
    4. Click Display
    5. Click Citation Manager
    6. Click All in this set (1-25)
    7. Click Complete Reference
    8. Click Direct Export
    9. Click Save
    10. Open EndNote
    11. Open Tutorial.enl
    12. Choose Biosis Previews (OVID)

Part 5: Entering and Managing References

  1. Create a new record via keyboard
    1. Open the Tutorial Library
    2. From the References menu, click New Reference
    3. Reference type: Book
    4. Enter the following information:
      • Author: Lo, Bernard
      • Year: 2000
      • Title: Resolving ethical dilemmas: a guide for clinicians
      • City: Philadelphia
      • Publisher: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
      • Keywords: Ethics, Medical; Decision Making; Life Support Care; Physician-Patient Relations
    5. From the File menu, click Close Reference
  2. Search for a set of references
    1. From the References Menu, click Search References
    2. Enter Ethics as the first search term
    3. Click And
    4. Enter Dogs as the second search term
    5. Click Search
  3. Print the found references
    1. Select any style from the output style list on the main toolbar
    2. From the File Menu, click Print
    3. Click OK
    4. From the References Menu, click Show All References

Part 6: Using EndNote While Writing a Paper with Microsoft WORD

  1. Create a new manuscript and bibliography with cited EndNote references
    1. Type the following text:
      Renal transplantation is now widely considered the preferred mode of renal replacement therapy.
    2. From the Tools menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
    3. In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
      1. Type Gohh in the Find box
      2. Click Search
      3. Click Insert
    4. Add the following text:
      The growing shortage of cadaver kidneys available for organ donation compared to the growing demand has led to an increase in the use of living unrelated donors for renal transplantation.
    5. From the Tools menu, click EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
    6. In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
      1. Type renal transplantation living unrelated donors in the Find box
      2. Click Search
      3. Highlight Samhan reference
      4. Click Insert
    7. Add the following text:
      Some people have argued that we may harm the donors in the long run.  The evidence, however, is clearly not so.
    8. From the Tools menu, click EndNote 6 submenu, then Find Citation(s)
    9. In the EndNote Insert Citations dialog box:
      1. Type Daar 1999 in the Find box
      2. Click Search
      3. Click Insert
    10. From the File menu, Save As manuscript.doc
  2. Format the manuscript and bibliography
    1. From WORD's Tool menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Format Bibliography
    2. In the EndNote Format Bibliography dialog box:
      1. Format document: manuscript.doc
      2. With output style: Annals Surgery
      3. Click OK
  3. Change the Bibliographic Style
    1. From WORD's Tool menu, click the EndNote 6 submenu, then Format Bibliography
    2. In the EndNote Format Bibliography dialog box:
      1. Format document: manuscript.doc
      2. With output style: Kidney Intl
      3. Click OK
