TYPE="stanza"><L REND="indent1">"Now hear, thou blazing god of day,</L><L>Unfaltering in thy destined way,</L><L>Who rollest on thy fiery path,</L><L>Blasting the rebel climes in wrath,</L><PB

REND="indent1">Where ebon locks disordered stray:</L><L>And ever as impatiently</L><L
REND="indent1">Aside their silken veil was thrown,</L><L>Beneath its curve the glancing eye,</L><L>Like lightning from the midnight sky,</L><L
REND="indent1">In awful beauty shone.</L><L>Something there was that mutely told,</L><L
REND="indent1">No vulgar stamp was graven here;</L><PB ID="p16" N="16"><L>An impress cast in finer mould,</L><L
REND="indent1">And nurtured in a gentler sphere,</L><L>Than might beseem those captive plains,</L><L>Crushed in Iberia's pond'rous chains.</L></LG><LG
TYPE="stanza"><L REND="indent1">Narrow and low the hut arose,</L><L>A summer bower for short repose,</L><L>Yet fenced around with thorn and stake,</L><L>From prowling foes that haunt the brake.</L><L>Roofed with the broad palmetto leaf,</L><L
REND="indent1">That fan&hyphen;like o'er the rafters spread,</L><L>And crested as a warrior chief,</L><L
REND="indent1">Beneath its light and plumy head.</L><L>Amid the flower&hyphen;wove lattice play</L><L>The quivering shade and stealing ray;</L><L>Floating on zephyr's liquid sigh,</L><L>A thousand dazzling forms are nigh,</L><L>That in the brilliant blaze unfold</L><L>Their gossamer besprent with gold.</L><PB
ID="p17" N="17"><L>There hums the insect bird, who gleams</L><L>Glorious as day's departing beams;</L><L>Beneath the proud papilio pressed,</L><L>The blossom bends its burdened crest;</L><L>He steps the flower, a conscious king,</L><L>Or fans the bud with gorgeous wing;</L><L>And not a breeze can hover nigh,</L><L>But teems with blended harmony;</L><L>As every leaf were vocal grown,</L><L>And breathed a descant all its own,</L><L>While bowed the palm with princely head,</L><L>And wide a guardian shadow spread.</L></LG><LG
TYPE="stanza"><L REND="indent1">A simple couch of fragrant leaves,</L><L>In purple cased, each guest receives;</L><L>And Izram, from his secret hoard,</L><L>Profusely heaps the bending board</L><L>With all the tempting fruits that lie</L><L>Mellowing beneath a genial sky;</L><PB
ID="p18" N="18"><L>And while their tints commingling glowed,</L><L>A juice nectareous sparkling flowed,</L><L>In shells of cocoa, richly bound</L><L>With hoops of burnished gold around.</L></LG><LG
TYPE="stanza"><L REND="indent1">With winning grace, in courtly guise,</L><L>The Mexican his comrade plies;</L><L>Selecting oft, with studious care,</L><L>The choicest of their woodland fare;</L><L>With mirthful thought, and sportive smile,</L><L>Cheering their sweet repast the while.</L></LG><LG
